Mysterious Kap Arkona in Rügen

Mysterious Kap Arkona in Rügen

Kap Arkona is the most northerly cape of Rügen. Chalky cliff  is a 43-metre-high cape and it used to be a famous place of Slavic god (Svantevit) worship. You can still find there a well-known fishing village dating back to the medieval ages called Vitt. It still reminds us of past times, however all houses are of course modern. Kap Arkona has also two lighthouses and huge swathes of farmland! Seeing the Fairy tale-idyllic landscape should be a must for all tourists visiting the island of Rügen 😊.

Kap Arkona

How to get to Kap Arkona from Sassnitz?
  • maybe by bike?

This time we skiped the tourist information and immediately went to the bicycle rental in Sassnitz. There are several but we went to the random one on the main road. The distance between Sassnitz and Kap Arkona is 34.5 km. We were fully aware, but still wanted to challenge ourselves. The cost to rent a bike for 24 hours was 8 €. We asked in German, but unfortunately we couldn’t understand the guy, because he asked whether we want „kleinemeineeine” or „einekleinemeine” bike. Hahaha I’m sorry, but my German is not that good and I don’t know all this complicated words related to bikes. I asked him again for English translation, but he offered to show us those bikes. He did it, but we still didn’t get it 😛 Then he asked us where were we going. When he heard Kap Arkona, he definitely advised against this idea. Such a „bicycle island” and everyone is against bike’s!

  • let’s take a bus again

It supposed to be a direct bus from Sassnitz to Kap Arkona, but that wasn’t actually true.  It was almost 11:00 AM, and our bus had to be in about 1.5 hours. On the schedule was also another one in 10 minutes, which went only half the route of its journey. Despite this, we decided to try and ride the bus, hoping that we would change somewhere. Fortunately it turned out that in the town where our bus supposed to end, absorber bus was waiting for us that would take us almost to the Kap Arkona! Mr. driver explained us everything and told us to buy a daily ticket. I don’t remember exactly how much it cost, but be prepared for big amount. After the first change it turned out that we still have another change in Altenkirchen.

Altenkirchen

As the name suggests, in the village was the old church. We had 20 minuts for the next bus and the church was exactly opposite to the bus stop. We couldn’t skip this addtional attraction, particularly when the church is the oldest church on the Island of Rügen!

Bigger surprise caused only restaurant in this small town, which had quite a lot of customers 😳. Actually, except for one couple in the church, people in the restaurant were the only ones we encountered in this place …

Location is also rich of beautiful houses 😍

Putgarten

Bus to Putgarten drove only 10 minutes. This was the final stop and Kap Arkona and Vitt can be reached by small train (6 € unless all the rides), or by car! You can also walk there, what we did. The route is fairly short (about 1 km) and very pleasant. You can safely wear lightweight shoes (even sandals) on the entire tour. For the first point we have chosen a Kap Arkona and then Vitt. Before we left, we had checked the bus schedule. I recommend to do that, because last bus was quite early (around 06:00 PM). So we had about 5-6h on embracing the entire cape.

Below is a plan attractions located on Kap Arkona and Vitt. We missed 1-3 (bunkers). At 5 and 6 are lighthouses (older and younger). If you want to go to the beach (necessarily) go to the 4th. Statue of Svantevit is 7. Navigation tower – 8. The furthest point on Kap Arkona is 9. Another descent to the beach is under 10, but I think it was closed as we were passing. Finally 11 is a beautiful fishing village Vitt.

Kap Arkona

Regrets that the picture below is not mine. We didn’t have a chance to see Kap Arkona from this perspective. So sad, because the view is amazing!

As I mentioned above, the route to Kap Arkona was very enjoyable. Not counting the importunate flies, which were very intrusive!!!! Despite these minor unpleasantness, our camera had no respite. Lighthouses and navigation tower in the midst of the field looked beautifully!

Lighthouses 🙂

  • Lighthouses (and other things around them :D)

Entrance to the lighthouses and navigation tower costs around 5-8 €. You can go up and see the symbolic exhibition inside. We decided to skip this and admire this architecture attractions only from outside. Additionaly, old anchors and buoys are located around lighthouses. You can enjoy them without limits. You will also find several bars where you can eat something.

Not sure what is it… any ideas? 🙂

  • Sunbath vol. 3

If you follow the path, you reach the entrance to the beach. First you have to pass a forest and than go down the stairs. Before you go down, take a moment and admire amazing views!

Amazing view 🙂

Amazing view 🙂

The beach is amazing. I do not know if you’ve noticed, but it is mainly green, with a slight touch of gray at the entrance to the sea. I’ve never seen the beach in these colors. Despite the rocky bottom of the sea, there is still lots of algae. Fortunately, this doesn’t spoil the whole charm of the place. If you like extreme hike, you can walk on the rocky beach to Vitt.

Ahoy!

  • On the way to Vitt

As I mentioned previously, you can reach Vitt from the beach or walk along the cliff on the top. We strongly recommend the second option because of the views and more comfortable path. The fishing village is away about 1,5 km, so it should take 20 minutes. We needed a little more time because of the photoshooting. On the way to Vitt is only one vantage point from which you can enjoy beautiful view:

I’m an artist 😀

So lonely!

Unfortunately, from this place you won’t see Lighthouses or Navigator tower!

Vitt

We feel like somewhere in countryside! Before entering the village, we traverse the fields full of crops. We went down and down till we entered to the village. Village was full of white houses whose roofs look like made from straw :D. We took some pictures. We did it very surreptitiously, because they are private houses! I’m not sure if you would be happy when so many tourist take a picture of your house 😛 :P. Nevertheless, this interesting and at the same time beautiful buildings, had to refer to the former climate and history of the settlement.

Houses are very simple but still so beautiful!! 🙂

Welcome to the Vitt!!

Roses fits perfectly 🙂

At least one picture with this beauty 😀

  • … sunbath vol 4?

Haha, again on the beach! However, not everyone lives on the seaside, that is why we wanted to spend some time on the beach 🙂 A bar with fresh fishes is located next to the beach. We don’t know the quality and the taste of food, because I’m not a big fan of fishes, so we skipped! We did same with small, wooden pier. Instead of that we went to the rocky beach. This time sea bottom wasn’t rocky and was free of algae! Only a clean and smooth water. Such a smooth sheet has also disadvantages. If there is no waves, jellyfishes swim very close to the shore. Otherwise, waves can throwe them on the shore. Apparently, those from the Baltic  don’t burn … but I’m not sure – I haven’t tried :D. I keep a distance from them!

  • Time to come back

Time flies and we had only a lil bit more than 1 hour to the bus. We came back to Putgarten. On our way back we passed beautiful, old church! We didn’t have time to enter it…

Beautiful church in Vitt

Putgarten again!

Putgarten is a small place, but due to the flourishing tourism is getting more and more houses (which in addition resemble those of Vitt), as well as several restaurants and even considerable souvenir shops. We ate again the currywurst, but this time it wasn’t good.

Bye, Bye Vitt 🙁

Almost like in Vitt, but it’s only Putgarten 😀

Putgarten

That’s all!

That was our last trip on this beautiful Island. We took a bus to Sassnitz and did small shopping. We left the next morning.
