Sassnitz – Best starting point to explore Rügen

• Sassnitz… good for whom?

Sassnitz is definitely not the best place for lazy-bones and sunbathers! This coastline is mostly occupied by the sizable harbor, pier and of course the beautiful cliffs. There are beaches under the cliffs, although with not very safe entrance into the sea. In addition, you must have in mind the fact, that everywhere in front of the entrance to the beach with cliffs are signs that inform about the possibility of landslides cliffs. So sunbath in this area is not the safest! Besides that, in the sea and on the shore is quite a lot of algae, which stink horrible and attracts a lot of intrusive flies (apparently this year was the plague). To sum up: you won’t find a comfortable sunbathing here!

• Perfect for explorers!

Meanwhile, if someone is geared mainly to explore the island, this place is great. Accommodations are cheaper than in resorts, as well as food and village is situated well, because you may easily access many parts of the island. Besides that, you are so close to the biggest attractions of Rügen – the cliffs in the Jasmund Park. Thus, Sassnitz offers great connection with other places and the most desirable Rügen attraction! Here also the last Regio Train station, so you can easily and quickly get to the big cities. In addition, Sassnitz has a large port where ferries goes even to Sweden.

Accommodation

Rügen is not the cheapest place, especially if you go there in the season. It was very hard to find something good and cheap. Luckily, booking.com helped us! We paid 710 zł for the two of us for 3 nights and in comparison with other possible offers it was the cheapest one. Many people rents in his home rooms with private bathrooms! We were very pleased with our place, while it was very comfortable and clean. The owner was very kind and helpful. I don’t know their English skills, because we were talking in German. The only downside was the lack of internet. They don’t provide you food. Fortunately, nearby are two large supermarkets, where you can buy lunch.

What to do in Sassnitz?

Our tour in Sassnitz lasted two days, although, of course, the city is small and can be easily done in one day. We were forced to spread over two days, due to time and weather.

Day 1

We arrived late in the afternoon, hungry like a wolves. The supermarket was the closest place, where we could get food, so without hesitation, we did small shopping and came back to our apartment. It was around 6 PM, but fortunately the day was long and the weather was nice. If so, why not to see the sunset from the beach? Yeah, if you read carefully my blog, you already know that in Sassnitz you won’t find nice beaches! We have changed our plans after some time. Our next goal was harbour and walk along the longest pier in Europe. Sassnitz has the longest outer pier in Europe with a length of 1,450 metres. Construction started in 1889 and it was finally completed in 1912. At the end of the pier is located green-white lighthouse, which looks very lovely. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see the sunset, because it was completely on the other side of  the town. We took some pictures, and then returned home to rest before tomorrow.

Day 2

The morning greeted us with torrential rain. At least we could have some sleep without remorse. Around noon the rain stopped. We went to a nearby point of information for a few details. They were really helpful and gave us valuable advices, for example: How to reach the cliffs. It’s good to visit them before the trip!!

When we came back from the Park…

Rain was coming again to the town and we were once again hungry like a wolfs. We found a decent kebab for 4 € on the main road in Sassnitz. While we were eating,it was raining heavily. Well, at least we managed to come back from cliffs. Fortunately, the rain passed quickly, so we decided to explore Sassnitz – after all, it was only 5 PM!

Along the Promenade

After a big meal time for a dessert. The choice was quite sizable. There was a lot of expensive restaurants located on the Promenade. We managed to spot a huge glass of vanilla ice creams with strawberries and whipped cream for 4 €. It looked so delicious, but we decided to get one and share. That was a good move, because we still weren’t able to eat everything!

Wooden Pier

There are  two piers in Sassnitz. First one, we visited yesterday, but apart from that, there is an old wooden pier, which we find toward the cliffs. You should enter this pier as well, because it spreads the beautiful view of the historic hotel / Villa. But I must warn you: The pier doesn’t look very stable, but as you can see – we walked along the pier and we are still alive, so I hope you will also manage!

We started feeling tired and the sky was getting dark again. We were on our way to home, but we passed also a centre of Sassnitz! Before we move to the next point, I share with you my best picture from harbour!

„Town Center”

The town center is very quiet. Actually, there are only hotels. Some are older, more historic and architecturally elaborate, while others are simple, more or less modern, not drawing at all of our attention. Here and there small pubs, restaurants and shops. Bright colors dominates, especially white. Incredible silence everywhere. As you can see, the whole village life is concentrated along the promenade, which is not that crowded in my opinion. To our surprise, City Hall is not on the market, but the on main road. The whole town (except maybe the  railway station) is very clean. However, if you do not have time, then you can skip this part. It is better to go for Europe’s longest pier and walk along the promenade.
