Eguisheim: France’s Favorite Village

24 maja 2018
The most beautiful village in France

Every year, the French choose their favorite French monument, house and garden. In 2013, the title of the most beautiful French village went to a small Alsatian town – Eguisheim. Although this is not the first award for Eguisheim, shortly after this price, the village started to visit 70% more tourists. In addition, our beautiful Alsatian village belongs to Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (the most beautiful French villages), which currently has 155 „members” (as of 05.2018). It is hard not to agree that this is a great honor for Eguisheim and at the same time a sufficient reason to see this extraordinary village. So let us take you to the magical Alsatian land that has stolen not only the tourists hearts, but for the entire French nation!

How to get to Eguisheim

Our base for exploration the small Alsatian towns (Eguisheim was the first stop) was Colmar. We rented a car (soon there will be more details about renting a car in Alsace) and we came to a town just 7 km far away! 😀 It means that you can even walked here from Colmar (or come by bike). Apparently, there is a bus between Colmar and Eguisheim, but I can’t find any valuable information about it. I saw that on the forum people mentioned about some buses, but honestly, during our stay, we didn’t even see them. So if they are any buses, they don’t even run very often. Therefore, the best option is to rent a car! 🙂 Parking in our village is paid if you decide to leave the car right at the entrance to the city. You can also leave the car on the road for free (yes, we did it, as did the others, and there were no consequences). 😀

Where to start?

Eguisheim is a small town, currently inhabited by about 1,500 people. A quiet walk around the city should not take you more than 2-3 hours (therefore it is worth coming here by car, then go further). 😀 If you look at the map, you will notice that our settlement is built according to an oval plan. In the center is located a castle, which was already settled in the XI century. Around the castle grew an oval settlement. At the same time Eguisheim rised his only pope – Leon IX, whose monument can be admired next to the Château Saint-Léon (Leon’s IX castle)! 🙂

The symbol of Alsace is a stork – we already know why;)

In fact, we tricked you a bit! We reached the center at the end of our tour! 😛 After entering the town, first we passed the town hall. (By the way, we were absolutely convinced that this is a historic hotel!) Then we wanted to go straight, but one place made us turn left … Speaking of course of the most popular place in Eguisheim! Even on postcards in Colmar, we saw this charming corner of our Alsatian village. This is a beautiful little house, located in the middle of the road and separating it into two parts. Extremely charming place, attracts a lot of amateurs (and not only) of photography! 🙂 You will find it at the Rue du Rempart Sud.

Even gates are beautiful in Eguisheim! 🙂

Eguisheim hasn’t always been so colorful!

What if only some houses were colored and the rest gray? Well, it’s hard to believe that Eguisheim originally looked like that! Only a few, rich inhabitants of this place could afford a bit of fantasy in the form of a colorful house. I don’t hide that it’s hard to imagine it, because colorful houses are the showcase of Alsace! Meanwhile, the idea to paint the houses was born in the 1950s. And you know what? I’m so glad that it happened, because who would come here if it was gray, dark and gloomy? 😉 Only wine lovers, because don’t forget that our town is on the Alsatian wine route. There are many places where you can try this divine drink, but we leave this pleasure for later! 😛

P.S. Not only colors decorate the façades of local houses. Look how most of them are beautifully decorated with flowers and plants!
