Lovely Colmar – things to see

22 maja 2018
The most magnificent city of Alsace

Exactly between Strasbourg and Swiss Basel is located the most beautiful (in our opinion) 🙂 city of Alsace – Colmar. Don’t think that we found ourselves here accidently. I have been persecuted by beautiful, instagram pictures from this city for a long time. And you know what? It didn’t disappoint us! It was exactly how somebody said:

Colmar is the quintessence of what is the most wonderful in Alsace.

Wonderfully preserved historic buildings, tons of colors and trees covered by flowers. What can we ask for more? Imagine that Colmar lies in the middle of a wine trail that stretches between the Vosges mountains and the Rhine. If you haven’t heard about this wonderful place yet, or are just heading there, let us give you some tips of Colmar! Ready? Let’s start! 🙂

How to get to Colmar?

We came to Colmar by Flixbus from Strasbourg for 5 euros. The trip takes just over an hour. A faster (but also a bit more expensive) alternative can be a train. The journey lasts 30 minutes and the average price fluctuates around 13 euros. However, if you buy a ticket in advance, you will pay only 6 euros. Here you can buy tickets and check the timetable. When it comes to cheap flights, the nearest airport is in Basel. An alternative, it can be located a bit further Baden-Baden, to which we flew by Ryanair from Warsaw.

Accommodation in the 19th century!

For the first time during our trip we got a great flat! I didn’t think that I would ever be so charmed by our accommodation (due to budget visits). In truth, we only rented a room, but we could use the whole flat! Beautifully decorated in the old style, with a library of books from the eighteenth century, antique furniture, a piano, etc. And all this in the city center – right next to the main station! 🙂 We highly recommend it and leave you the link here.

La petite Venise

In Stasbourg our first stop was Petite France, likewise in Colmar we started from La petite Venise. Similarly as in Strasbourg, we started exploring Colmar from the most picturesque place in this charming town. As you probably guessed, the name comes from Venice. The point here is primarily to refer to life on the water (and the canal), on which the old life in Colmar was mainly fought.

Don’t take me wrong, but I think that the name is not exactly what it is, because I don’t associate this place with Venice at all! 😛 (okay, maybe it reminds a bit of Burano, but not really). 😉 Colmar and La petite Venise, is simply nicer (maybe because I have a weakness for half-timbered buildings), more well-groomed (well, Colmar is much smaller and a bit easier to take care of it) and more colorful (well, because where are such pastel colors we will see in Venice? Ok maybe in Burano, but  it’s something else, because without a half-board). Besides, Colmar doesn’t drown, so it’s also easier for the city authorities to take care of its neat and elegant appearance. Otherwise, it’s hard not to notice German influence here, do you? 🙂

Au Vieux Pignon

The truth is, no matter which way you look, you will definitely see a beautiful house. Therefore, to distinguish themselves somehow, some owners of houses decided to take care of additional decorative elements. And yes, depending on the season or any holiday, the Au Vieux Pignon is decorated with additional elements. During our visit, these were flowers and hearts. During Christmas, they are converted into eggs or stars or presents. A great idea to attract attention and believe us, it’s really charming. Especially that there is a gift shop in this building – the owner know how to attract customers! 🙂

Maison Pfister

As you will be next to Au Vieux Pignon, a bit behind it, is located a Maison Pfister. This is supposedly the best-known house in Colmar, which was established in 1537, and for over a hundred years has been on the pages of the history of the city as a monument. I didn’t like this building, but I think it’s worth coming here, even to see the original 16th-century residential building.

St. Martin’s church

Since we are already in this place, right on the right corner is located a monumental church of St. Martin. Although there has never been a bishopric in Colmar, it is also known as the Cathedral because of its size. In fact, from the outside it looks really impressive and quite interesting, but inside (sorry for colloquialism) blows boredom… Forgive us, maybe we just can not always appreciate everything? 😛 On the other hand, certainly a big plus for the church for modesty!

Brasserie Des Tanneurs

This is another building that caught our attention. This time, we are dealing with French cuisine restaurant, which is trying to attract attention with all its strength! And they manage it sensational, because the yellow building decorated with red hearts and flowers draws the attention of every tourist! It’s hard to pass indifferently. We don’t know, however, whether you can say the same about served food in this place, but you must see this building! 🙂

Nooï

Speaking of food, we will tell you where we ate our lunch! Quite by accident, we came across this Italian bar where they sell pasta in boxes. You can choose the size of the package (I chose medium and Darek large), the type of pasta and sauce. Prices range between 5-8 euros. Very tasty, so we recommend it! 🙂

My Alio-Olio

Domaine Martin Jund

In the capital of Alsatian wines we didn’t try wine – the next day we plan to go to nearby smaller villages and try something there. If, however, you won’t have the opportunity to go further, it is said that the above family business is noteworthy! 🙂 But beware – here we are not based on our own experience, but on the internet opinion. 😛

Colorful Colmar

Colmar is a really small city, especially its historic part. You will see it in 2-3 hours. Unless you intend to visit museums, it probably will take you more time. We didn’t visit museums, we focused more on discovering the colorful corners of the city. Let us show you our favorites! 🙂

The Statue of Liberty

At the end – a small curiosity. Walking around Colmar, we often came across such metal markers in the sidewalk with the Statue of Liberty. We thought, okay – after all, it was a gift from the French for the Americans. There is also the Statue of Liberty in Paris, so we didn’t go deeper into the matter. However, during a car trip, on one of the roundabouts, we saw a miniature Statue of Liberty. Then we thought that there must be something more than just the fact that it was a gift from France. As it turned out, the creator of the Statue of Liberty – Auguste Bartholdi – was born in Colmar. Thus, this New York sculpture haunted us at every step! 😀

That’s all what we have prepared for you from this place! Let us know if you liked Colmar as much as we did! 🙂
