But, wait, where are we going?
This year, when friends asked us where we are going for a long may-weekend, our respond made them smile. Some of them never heard at all about Baden-Baden, others wondered where it is, and others added with an evil smie thatit’s not worth. Germany is not very oryginal destiny in Europe, but you must admit that Baden-Baden isn’t that popular. Although I would like to add that our tour was really extensive and quite unusual, because Baden-Baden wasn’t the only stop! 🙂 But here we will focus only on Baden-Baden. I will not cheat you either, that Baden-Baden is outstanding tourist attraction. We found ourselves here by accident, but we don’t regret. We’ve already seen many German cities, but the greenery and flowers in Baden-Baden totally amazed us. 😉 So let me show you this city!
How to get to Baden-Baden
We were traveling from Warsaw and believe me or not but we spent only 10 euro for a ticket to Baden-Baden! 😀 We bought it in January (only with hand luggage) and 27th of April we were already on a spot. Check Ryanair flights, maybe you will also find a nice deal! 🙂

Airport – city transfer
Busses run quite often from the airport to Baden-Baden or Karlsruhe. In our case, the ticket cost 3.5 euros and can be purchased both in the machine or by the bus driver. I think that a ticket to Karlsruhe costs between 7-8 euros.

Accommodation
It turned out that Baden-Baden is quite expensive city. 🙁 Both hotels and apartments exceeded our budget, and the choice was quite limited. Therefore, we bought 2 nights by airbnb in our next city, which we had in plans, namely in Heidelberg. While visiting Baden-Baden, we left our luggage in the lockers at the station that costs 4 euros.
Ready, steady, go!
Although we planned to travel to Heidelberg after tour of Baden-Baden, before we had headed to the city, we immediately bought a regional ticket Baden-Württemberg. Such a ticket is valid not only for regional trains, but also for public transport in a specific region. Due this fact, we didn’t have to buy an additional bus ticket. (Here you can read how this ticket works). It is worth to get the bus to the city center, because the railway station is extremely far from the center.
We got off the bus next to the opera and we walked towards the center. There are no historic buildings here, although the architecture in Baden-Baden reminds (obviously) the resort style. However, spring in this town is really charming. Juicy grass and blooming trees look awesome! 🙂

Trinkhalle
While walking around the green Baden-Baden, we didn’t even notice when we entered the Park. It was so nice and we even didn’t feel tired after the night (plane at 7 am)! However, we had a goal, which was the historic pump-room – Trinkhalle. I even imagined how I would taste the local water in a plastic cup. 😀
Instead of a cup of water we were disappointed when it turned out that there was no water in the pump room. There is a kind of tap in the middle, but there is an inscription on it that the water isn’t for consumption. Our bitterness didn’t last long, because the local pump room is a real gem of the city. It was built in the 19th century and its 90 meter „corridor” is decorated with 14 beautiful paintings, referring to the myths and sagas from the region. A real art gallery in the open air and at the same time an extraordinary treat for connoisseurs of art! 🙂

Casino
A spa without a casino? Boredom! But not in Baden-Baden! Well, you have to collect money somehow from the rich. 😉 The casino of Baden-Baden stands almost a hundred years longer than the pump room, so you see how enormous is the potential, since it has been functioning so far. 🙂 When we visited the casino it was still closed. 😛 Here you can check the opening hours and possible costs of available games (it is not even that expensive). We only managed to take a look through the closed door. I must admit that the place looks really luxurious, but without unnecessary kitsch! 🙂

Love in front of the casino! 🙂

City Center
The city center doesn’t stand out significantly. Classic, elegant, creamy-white buildings. Certainly a big plus are flowers, which are either placed along the restaurants or houses in pots, or are covered with buildings in the form of ivy. That is why the spring in Baden-Baden is a truly magical period and it is worth coming here at this time.
The guidebook also lists an antique pharmacy, which is located in the nearby streets, but I would not say that it is some „must see” when visiting Baden-Baden. I was much more intrigued by the sculpture of the colossus on the stairs. I still do not know what it symbolizes and what is the story behind! 😛

Lunch
In fact, only flights to Baden-Baden were cheap. 😛 Accommodation, restaurants and everything else was expensive. Fortunately, we managed to spot a Chinese restaurant (Lotus) with quite good prices of 5-8 euro for a dish. On Trip-Advisor, the place had good reviews, but for us was rally average. We ordered pasta with fried chicken. While the pasta was well seasoned and generally tasted great, unfortunately I couldn’t say the same about dry chicken. Well, maybe we just choosed the wrong dish? 😛

It doesn’t look that bad, right? 😛
Baths
Baths in Baden-Baden have been known since ancient times. The ruins of the bathhouse from this period are great evidence. What’s more, nowadays, on the two sides of the old remains of the Roman baths, there are new baths: Friedrichsbad and Caracalla. However, these are not cheap pleasures. The cheapest tickets start from 15 euros for entry to Caracalla, and in the case of Friedrichsbad (more antique and luxurious) from 25 euros. We rdidn’t enter these pleasures, but if you are interested, you can check the details here.

Friedrichsbad
New Castle
On the hill behind the baths, we finally noticed the castle – Neues Schloss. It was built in the fourteenth century, and in the fifteenth century changed its character to a residence castle. The margraves of Baden-Baden used to live there. Interestingly, now the castle is closed and nobody know what’s going on. First, it was supposed to be prepared for a luxury hotel, then for apartments, but all works stopped and nobody knows what’s next. 😃 However, I certainly can recommend you to climb from Marktplatz to the castle hill, to see a wonderful panorama of the city !! 🙂

Bernhardus kirche
After short relax we decided to move slowly towards the station. At the end, we visited another church, which we spotted while traveling by bus towards the center. We decided to look at it closely because it looks really original! 🙂

This was our last stop in Baden-Baden. We didn’t think that this resort town would surprise us so positively. In fact, you can relax and rest here. Just outside the city is located the most beautiful forest in Germany – Black Forest.
