Murano – a glass island on the Venetian lagoon

Murano

Only 4 kilometers away from Venice is located a much smaller, but equally famous island – Murano. Although it has only 5.5 thousand residents, its name is known and correctly associates by many more people. Especially fans of jewelry and glass should heard about this island earlier. This is the place where the high-quality glass has been created and is proudly presented on shop windows around the world. Wonderful colors and original forms of Venetian glass intrigue travelers from around the world. Glass products are not everything that the island offers. It is also worth to take a short walk between some corners! 🙂

How to get to Murano?

For this purpose, all you need to do is catch the Vaporetto, which will take you straight to your destination. It really doesn’t matter where you get off to Murano, because the island is so small that you can easily reach the desired places in a dozen minutes. From Venice and the nearby islands there is a lot of Vaporetto, which stop at Murano, so I recommend you to check google maps or to the timetable of Vaporetto. 🙂 Here you can check the timetable and see the Vaporetto routes.

Museum of Glass (Museo Vetrario)

Our main goal of the trip to the island of Murano was the Glass Museum. We are not some fans of museums, but usually we are trying to visit more interesting and original ones. In this case, our curiosity was caught by the Museum of Murano Glass. In the end, Venice is famous for producing this beautiful raw material. Even Pandora uses Murano glass in its charms collection. Therefore, I couldn’t deny myself the pleasure of looking into the birthplace of this type of jewelry.

Admission to the Museum of Glass as for Venetian prices is not that expensive (10 euros per person). We purchased a City Pass earlier, so we didn’t have to worry about the ticket. Unfortunately, the museum disappointed us very much. Although the topic and the idea is good, the exhibition itself is extremely boring and very poor. We expected, above all, a much larger number of exhibits – after all, there must be a lot of them on the island? Meanwhile, the Museum is small and in addition most of exhibits is not very interesting. Generally, the shop shelves selling glass seemed more interesting to us than the exhibits in the Museum. It is a pity, because we believe that the potential is huge and completely unused. It would be much better to organize contests every year and collect the most interesting works in the museum! 🙂 😛

  • A few facts of the Venetian glass

The process of producing Murano glass was formed in the 13th century. Byzantine craftsmen who fled to Venice in the 13th century played a significant role in the development of Venetian glass. A few hundred years later, the proficiency in impregnating glass with colors and increasing its transparency was achieved, and many new decorative techniques were invented. Due to fear of fires, glass production was transferred to one island – Murano. Interestingly, the glass-producing craftsmen enjoyed great respect and recognition throughout Venice.

A short walk around the island

Disappointed with the Museum of Glass exposition, we decided to give Murano another chance and take a short walk around the island. It is not much different from Venice, especially since the main channel here is as impressive as the Grand Canal. On the other hand, the island is a little more colorful, although it is still far to Burano. A big plus is the smaller number of tourists, so that the walk in this place seemed to us extremely pleasant. Smaller numbers of tourists also have their disadvantages in the form of major neglect of most buildings. You can see that the government is mainly focused on Venice, which in some places can also be deterred. Unfortunately, it is more visible on the glass island. Perhaps this is also due to the fact that the island is small and not everything can be hidden so well?

While walking around Murano, be sure to look at the glass blue sculpture near the clock tower. 🙂

Don’t hesitate to visit Murano!

Contrary to the text above, we don’t discourage you to the glass island. The fact that the island turned out to be the least interesting in our opinion doesn’t have to be picked up similarly by you. We always believe that it is better to check than to regret later that you were not there. 🙂

So much love! 😀

That’s all! We came back to Venice tired and hungry. If you want more from Venice check also:
