Colorful island
Burano was an obligatory tour point during our stay in Venice. Honestly, I didn’t hear about this island some time ago. The first time I found it on Instagram, when someone posted a photo with colorful houses. I remembered the name Burano, but I didn’t really explore where the island is. When I discovered that Burano is part of the Venetian Lagoon, I was amazed! At that time I knew that I would visit this place while visiting Venice. As I promised, I did it. I don;t know if you’ve already noticed from other posts, but I’m a big fan of colorful houses! I know that not everyone understands this, so this place may seem boring to some people, because apart from colorful houses, there are no other attractions.
How to get to Burano?
I was fully convinced by colorful houses, which is why we started our second day in Venice with a trip to Burano. We came by bus to the main bus station and immediately headed towards Vaporetto, which goes to Murano. We had to change at Murano. To our positive surprise, both Vaporetto are connected, so right after reaching Murano, we had a Vaporetto to Burano! 🙂
From what I saw, it is also possible to go with this second Vaporetto straight into Burano, but in our case it was more profitable to take a route with a change. Besides, we were very lucky that we got on the main bus station, because imagine that the Vaporetto was so crowded that not everyone enteredt on the train station! If such crowds happen to you, try to catch any Vaporetto to Murano or try from St. Mark’s Square. In our case, the trip lasted one hour. Here you can check the timetable and see the Vaporetto route.

Where to start?
Although the biggest attraction here are colorful houses, I put my phone back in my purse and went ahead! I love this type of sightseeing, because I don’t have to wonder which street to enter, to get where I want. Here, no matter where I turn, I will find something nice to look at! The island is small enough that it’s hard to get lost on it. The best time to visit Burano is when the sun shines. Unfortunately, we missed it, but even so a lot of positive and colorful photos have been made. I won’t write much about them. However, I believe that Burano is undescribed, because you just have to see this colors! 🙂

Lace island
Inhabitants of the island for a long time were known mainly for the production of lace. In the 16th century the lace from Burano experienced a real economic boom. Soon, the material spread so quickly across Europe that it stopped the production and then the fall of the craft. In the nineteenth century, the lace industry hardly ever existed on Burano. It was not until 1872 that the lace school was opened and production started again. However, the rising prices of this material in the twentieth century resulted in the closure of the school and the discontinuation of lace production on the island. Currently, the lace-making school functions as a museum, and on Burano there are several shops where you can buy lace souvenirs (the question is whether they are actually made in Burano or made in China). 😉

The color of the house? Must be approved!
Who would have thought that if you want to paint your home in a different color, then you must ask the local government for permission? Bah! Even the color has to be agreed in advance. That is why in Burano the colors are not accidental and are rarely repeated (although I have the impression that there are more warm colors). I don’t know if this is a good solution, but I think that some residents would like to paint their house by worts color ever, just to restrict tourist. I realized that when I saw on some houses the inscription to keep a distance of a few meters! 😀 Well, on the other hand I understand that it can be annoying when every in front your house come tourists and take pictures. 😀

The main Square
Don’t be hungry here!
A small hunger hit us on Burano. We have discovered with horror that there are not many cafes, bakeries or even small shops where we could grab a snack. And when there is something, prices are very high, and snacks are not necessarily tasty! I guess that 4 thousands inhabitants doesn’t want tourists to spend too much time here! 😛

We spent about 2-3 hours on the island. As you can see, colorful houses can absorb some time! I know that the content is short, but the truth is that you can’t write much of Burano. You just have to see it! 🙂
