Fairytale residences in Poland – Moszna Palace

Moszna Palace has been on my bucket list for a long time. Finally, I was able to visit this castle. The opportunity came last weekend – when we have a long weekend in first week of May in Poland. Due to the fact that we are leaving for a longer trip soon and the weather is not encouraging to make bigger plans nowadays in Poland, we decided to go on a spontaneous trip to Moszna! How to get to Moszna Palace?

Moszna Palace is located in the Opole County, about 34 km. South from Opole. We took off from Cracow, which meant a much longer route to overcome. The distance to reach was 200 km. Fortunately, the route runs mostly on the highway so it took us 2 hours and we were on the spot. It was 2 PM –  we don’t belong to the early birds – we prefer to stay in the bed as long as possible. 😛 When we turned into a street that led to the castle, the first parking guy encouraged us to stay at his place. There were quite a lot of cars and the area was unknown to us, so we decided to stay there, what cost us 5 zlotys for the whole day. Not that bad, but when we approached the palace, it turned out that there was still a big parking free of charge. It was crowded, but I guess we could find a free spot. So, if you come in a week then try to drive to the end and maybe get a free place. 🙂

Too many people…

It is known that the long weekend of May and finally the sunny day will convince people to leave the house. We didn’t think we would meet such crowds! Already on our way to the palace we passed lots of people. On the way to the Palace, we passed small shops with food and some other stuffs. Finally, approached the castle and we entered in the queue. However, we weren’t exactly inside the Palace, because it turned out that there are two ticket offices. The first one is only for those who wants to enter the park and castle area. The second office is for this one who wants to see interiors. If you want to enter only the first area prepare 7 zlotych.

Everywhere queue …

I guess too many people came up with the idea to visit the Moszna Palace during the long weekend of May. Generally, we walked from the queue to the queue. When we reached the entrance to the palace, a few meters further waiting for us another queue – queue to the castle. Fortunately, in the group strength, so while the male part of the team was standing in line for tickets, I quickly jumped to the toilet line. You can only guess that the queue was huge and I was standing in about 20 min. :/  Imagine that, the male team had time to buy tickets (12 zł per person), gone to the toilet and still were waiting for me. Horrible … It is terrible that in such a place was ONLY 1 toilet. As you can see, the place is completely unprepared for such crowds.

Let’s grab some food

It was a few minutes after 2 PM, but we got our tickets for 3:45 PM. So lucky, because Moszna Palace is open only till 4 PM. We decided to eat a lunch. Luckily, in Moszna Palace are located reastaurant and bakery. But, guess what happened when we entered to the castle’s restaurant. HUGE QUEUE. We wouldn’t manage to grab some food and eat before 3:45 PM. So, we decided to leave the castle area and went to small BBQ shop that we passed earlier. Keep your ticket if you want to do that. It’s not a problem if you have your ticket you can always come back later.

With a small amount of time, we return to the palace again. Finally, we had a time for what we came for: time to admire the Palace! And there is really something to admire! The Moszna Palace is beautiful on every side and for me it looks like a fairy tale building. Especially when it is surrounded by green park, colorful flowers and fountain. I didn’t want to stop taking pictures of it, because from every perspective it looks wonderful. I have seen many castles, but this one has a truly unique and original charm! Time to go to the Palace!

Punctuality began our tour. I don’t know exactly how many people are in one group, but there were quite a big number. Of course, we began with the history of the Palace. Here is a few basic information for you! 🙂 It is said that Moszna belonged to the Templars in the Middle Ages, but I was not able to find out whether a castle was already there. Our fairytale Moszna was built in 17th century and at that time belonged to the von Skall family. The present appearance of the castle came from the end of the 19th century and the last wing was built in 1913. Since the 19th century castle belonged to the von Tiele-Winckler family (descendants still live in Germany). The castle was built in neo-gothic and neo-renaissance style.

• Interiors disappointed us a lil bit…

Unfortunately, at the beginning we got bad information. Namely, during the Second World War a large part of the Palace was destroyed or stolen. What does it mean? Nothing good … because almost nothing left. We visited only 5 or 6 rooms, in which almost nothing really survived. The most impressive one is available without a ticket – it is a well designed saloon which is acafe nowadays. However, Moszna Palace can’t offer a lot. Despite amazing external view, interiors are disappointing. Perhaps that is why most of the room are dedicated as hotel rooms.
