4 Days in Algarve. Day 2 – Lagos

Day 2 – Lagos

Lagos is one of the oldest and most attractive villages in the Algarve. It used to be the last stop for the great sailors, who wanted to discover unknown world. We also made this place as our base for another two days. The coast around Lagos is considered as one of the most beautiful in the world. It is not surprising therefore that this small town is attracting crowds of tourists who loves the orange cliffs. Probably for the city this is a good business as there is no industry here, and fishing is not as advanced as it might have been. How did we manage our time in Lagos?  Wich beaches are our favorite? Where to eat? You will find out in this post!

Watch the video from our entire trip of Algarve!!

Short introduction 😉

We arrived to Lagos late in the evening after a day trip around the South West Natural Park. We rented a car at the airport in Faro, from which we had a return flight to Warsaw. I personally think that visiting the Algarve without a car is a waste of time. There are buses and connections between cities – we have seen bus stops etc. Unfortunately they don’t go too often which definitely limits the possibilities. In Lagos we decided to stay 2 nights. It wasn’t the best choice :P. Perhaps the beaches on Lagos are the best, but they are only 4 beaches and they can be seen in one day. The rest of the beaches (worth attention) are between Portimao and Albufeira. The second issue was our hotel. It was not the worst one, but compared to what we had in Albufeira it was awful. 😛

What was wrong with our hotel in Lagos?

Usually we don’t have many desires about the hotel since we don’t sleep at all in those 5 star hotels. 😛 On booking we found a highly rated Lagos Downtown Guesthouse. The hotel was: New, clean, close to the center, comfortable, etc. We also saw the photos of the facility and it looked really cool. We booked it. We came, we opened the door to the room and somehow it looked different. Room was a little like a cage, we had a fear to open the window, because we lived on the ground floor and the only shelf we had was next to the bed. There was not even a place to put things on the shelf. We had a shared bathroom and a fridge with a second room but there weren’t even chairs or a comfortable table to eat. We asked for cutlery and the plate and we got dirty staff. 😀 So I don’t know where these good reviews come from. I wouldn’t rate this place so high…

Ponta da Piedade

We didn’t explore the city of Lagos. We came to the Algarce mainly for the cliff coast, on which we wanted to spend as much time as possible.

Ponta da Piedade was our first stop. This place is considered as one of the most beautiful in the world. I don’t bother with these reviews either. Various yellow-orange rock formations against the blue sky and the turquoise ocean are the place that everyone should visit before die! You can look at them indefinitely, they can be photographed from different perspectives, at any time of the day and year, and will always be stunning. On Ponta da Piedade we walk on cliffs without security. The stairs were cut down in the rocks so you can go down if you want to go on a boat ride or kayak between the cliffs. Tours are not so cheap and you have to pay between 20-30 euros. We wanted to go to the Benagil cave, therefore on a boat cruise along the coast we decided to go from Portimao.

Camilo Beach

The nearby Camilo Beach is also very impressive. This beach not only offers beautiful views from the nearby cliff but also encourages to sunbathing. Unfortunately, the descent to the beach is quite demanding because you have to beat around houndred stairs, but the reward of this effort is worth it! The beach is surrounded by beautiful, tall, yellow-orange cliffs. Some of them are located even in the water. 🙂 The one cliff has a special tunel that goes to another beach! It is so cool to go through the cliff. 🙂 We fall in love with this place and we decided to relax there 2 hours. Unfortunately, the ocean at this time of year doesn’t encourage to swim. I dunked to my waist while taking pictures, but then I just jawed. In addition, before entering the beach there is information about the possibility of falling rocks from the cliffs, so be careful!

  • Lunch

Just before the entrance to Camilo Beach is located Camilo Restaurant. This location of restaurant with an ocean view generates additional costs. As we spared the whole trip and got some money left we decided to test this restaurant. 😉 It was delicious. I ordered white Sangria, seafood soup, king prawns and dessert. Darek also ordered soup, fish and water. The whole lunch cost us about 44 euros.

Dona Ana Beach

Can walking from beach to beach be boring? Definitely not in Lagos! Here every beach can boast and encourage you to take advantage of its charms! Dona Ana Beach is not as beautiful as Camilo and doesn’t have such interesting rock formations, but it offers a sandy entrance to the ocean! On previous beaches there were a lot of stones and some of them were sharp so it was easy to cut through the skin. Dona Ana doesn’t have such stones, and there is not much danger of erosion. In addition, we will find plenty of seashells here. It is amazing that on Camilo Beach, there was no one at all, and here it is possible to grab real treasures!

Beach da Rocha

We ended out beach trip in Lagos, so we got to the nearby Portimao to see da Rocha beach. It was a bit late so it was our last stop today. We wanted to end it with equally impressive views, as in the beginning. However, da Rocha beach, after seeing all these amazing beaches in Lagos, seemed uninteresting to us. It impressed us with its width, but besides, not so special. There are several cliffs that even proudly stick out over the water, but all in all – nothing more. We took a few photos, bought a magnet and went shopping,.Then we returned to Lagos. Such a pity that we missed the dos Tres Irmaos beach, which in the pictures looks much more interesting than da Rocha. Also if I can advise you something, then if you are focusing mainly on the cliffs, then better choose dos Tres Irmaos beach than da Rocha!
